Locust Contemporary Dance Works Premieres in Concert on 3/10 along with Celebrity Guests

Celebrity artists and top New York choreographers will be featured at the premiere concert of Fairfield County’s newest jazz/modern dance company, Locust Contemporary Dance Works, performing at the Crystal Theater (aka Ben Franklin Theatre on the corner of Bayview Ave. and Hillside St.) in Norwalk on March 10, 2007. The concert, titled “Of Light and Temptation,” will open doors at 6:45 pm for a multi-media art exhibit and VIP "meet and greet" with celebrity guests followed by the concert at 8:00 pm. Amy Sato, Capezio Marketing Director/Master Teacher says "This dynamic new dance company blends technical precision with†artistic expression, delivering a diverse repertoire that’s sure to captivate†audiences.” The concert will include special guest performances by the renowned recording artist, Taja Sevelle, and singer/composer/producer Drew Yowell as well as new works by New York and local choreographers and dance companies. In a unique approach to fusing dance with multi-media, one of the dance selections, "Crystal On Silk Under Glass," will incorporate an image of glass sculpture by Henry Richardson as performed by Locust Contemporary Dance Works and choreographed by Jimmy Locust set to the music of Johann Sebastian Bach. A professional dancer, choreographer, actor and teacher, Mr. Locust is the Founder and Artistic Director of Locust Contemporary Dance Works. In addition to the premiere of his inspirational new solo, We Fall Down, his company will perform his choreography in the pieces Of Light and Temptation, Worthy, Solitude: The Path of One and Calculated Perception. “My vision for the company is to find a solid blend where emotion and technique equally project a concept where the audience and community will feel and react positively to the moving imagery absorbed by their eyes.” explains Jimmy Locust. Since the company was founded in 2003, Locust Contemporary Dance Works has toured and performed in New Hampshire, New York City and its home state of Connecticut. They audition and add dancers annually who participate in rigorous dance classes and rehearsal schedules locally and in New York City as well as attend master classes with New York City’s finest choreographers, such as the Master Teacher and Marketing Director of Capezio, Amy Sato and Jaci Royal. The company is comprised of Samantha Buzzeo, Alexa Cognetta, Morgan Daddona, Jaclyn Fernandes, Catherine Heath, Angelica Heron, Megan Lacerenza, Da`ne Mellad, Niko Tsocanos and returning alumni company member Josue Jasmin from Stamford. Jimmy Locust is a professional dancer, choreographer, actor and master teacher who began his prestigious career as a principle dancer/choreographer for Gus Giordano Jazz Dance Chicago. He has danced with superstars Michael Jackson, Janet Jackson, Paula Abdul, Quincy Jones and Debbie Allen. His work spans The Grammys, MTV’s Video Music Awards, Academy Awards, the 1996 Olympic Games Opening Ceremonies, MTV’s Andy Dick Show, The George Lopez Show, films and commercials. He has choreographed fashion shows for Speedo, Fila, Diadora and New Balance and served as producer, artistic director and choreographer for Reebok’s Global Summit Reebok NYC, Avia and NBA Sportswear. Currently, he serves as Artistic Director for Stamford Performing Arts Center, Stamford, CT, where he shares ownership with business partners Gerrit and Carol Paasman. Locust is also founder of “No Hate but Harmony” a teen troupe, which presents anti-bullying and anti-hate skits and hip hop dances.

Guest performer Taja Sevelle (to perform a duet with Locust) was first signed by Prince, recording two CDs on Paisley Park/Warner Brothers/Reprise.† The first song she wrote, "Love is Contagious,”†was a #3 hit in Europe and was top 5 for weeks in many cities across America.† Taja Sevelle has worked and written with legends Burt Bacharach, Thom Bell, Nile Rodgers, Seal and Nellie Hooper among others.† She landed a deal with Sony and recorded "Toys of Vanity" to rave reviews around the world.† Taja is the founder of the charity Urban Farming that plants food on unused land and donates it to hungry people. Sevelle is also an inventor of a kitchen appliance that will debut on QVC this year.

Another guest performer, Drew Yowell, is best known throughout the tri-state area for his original acoustic guitar songs and vocals. He is an astute producer, applying his writing and production skills towards up and coming musical acts and working with seasoned session writers and musicians to top recording engineers, producers and arrangers. Yowell and Locust have collaborated over the years on several projects such as The Gift and Versus.

Featured sculptor Henry Richardson uses broken glass and traditional sculpting tools combined with the latest glass-bonding technology to create works that reflect his theme of regeneration, how people heal after trauma or emotional distress. "My work reminds us we’re all broken as human beings through life, constantly rebuilding ourselves, making us whole again." His sculptures are massive and light with a radiance and mood that constantly changes in response to the light around it. Richardson is a member of the Royal British Society of Sculptors and the Board of Directors of the International
Sculpture Center.

Other participating artists include Alison Amicone, Kelly Hayes, Jaci Royal, James Robey, Marti Etter, Jo-Ann Thomson-Claybourne and Jim Kahnweiler. Choreographer Alison Amicone served as co-captain of the N.Y. Knicks City Dance Team and was featured at the Grammy Awards, the MTV Music Awards, industrials for Nike, Reebok, and Wella Hair, as well as appeared on Good Day N.Y. and the Jay Leno Tonight Show. Soloist and guest choreographer Kelly Hayes, co-artistic director of New York’s RedShift Dance. Hayes currently dances with Dixie Fun Dance Theatre, Jody Sperling Time Lapse Dance and Darrah Carr Dance. Choreographer Jaci Royal, a distinguished performer with LA Underground and Outstanding Dancer with NY Dance Alliance, has traveled to Australia with Dance International and received acclaim for her choreography on Star Search. Marti Etter is the executive director of the Ballet School of Stamford who will perform an excerpt from Sleeping Beauty. Soloist James Robey is Artistic Director of the Bare Bones Dance Project in Ridgefield, the Ridgefield Conservatory of Dance, is on faculty at the Hartt School University of Hartford, author of a Jazz Dance Technique & Syllabus and has performed with the Metropolitan Opera Ballet, CT Ballet, NY Dance Theater, Cleveland Opera, and Disney among others. Jo-Ann Thompson-Claybourne is a mixed-media artist and instructor from Stamford whose works will be exhibited.

Jim Kahnweiler is an accomplished production artist, photojournalist and photographer whose images of people, architecture and nature from around the world will be featured in the art exhibit. Kahnweiler is also resident photographer for Locust Contemporary Dance Works and Stamford Performing Arts Center.
